The grant from the DOE’s Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing program will support the potential development of a commercial-scale manganese production facility. On a cost-share basis and subject to final negotiation, the DOE will provide 30 per cent of the cost of the manganese production facility, up to the grant award of US$166M.
S32 earlier said uninterested in building and owning the processor. Maybe the grant changes the equation enough for S32 to become a vertically integrated
HPMSM producer.
Battery chemistry is very new and far from settled. There are at least 100 coherent battery chemical formulations.
The qualities desired for a cell phone battery are distinctly different to a Battery Energy Storage System - weight, durability, cost. HPMSM may or may not feature as a 'future-facing ingredient'. GK & team are very aware of this. The grant lowers the risk a lot.
