I’m curious to see what unfolds with the hernia product development.

What is clear from recent Company communications is that PolyNovo is separating its polymer platform development into two distinct areas – graftable and implantable.

Graftable products include PNV’s current commercialized products of BTM and MTX for treatment of burns, acute and chronic wounds and wound reconstruction.

Development of an implantable product suite is the focus of current R & D, with hernia products the most advanced. Specifically, the Company has said that it is “developing a targeted solution for ventral hernia and complex abdominal wall reconstruction”. The novel textile being developed for the hernia products will also serve as “the building block” for products for breast tissue reinforcement, orthobiologics and other applications. It is planned that manufacturing processes, technology and equipment will be shared across the implantable suite of products.

For the implantable products, Swami talks of development occurring through “co-creation” with surgeons.  The seeking of surgeon feedback through the hands-on offering of implantable prototypes at this week’s ABA meeting would be part of that process.

With respect to commercialization of its implantable products, it seems that PolyNovo plans to work with partners. In last year’s Annual Report it was stated that one of PNV’s focus areas during this FY was to identify potential partners for products such as hernia and breast. There was also mention of “alliances with global category leaders and academia for clinical and health economics evidence” for new products.

Becton Dickinson, with its Phasix mesh family of products, claims to be the category leader for hernia repair and bioresorbable mesh (Medtronic also lays claim to being a market leader in hernia products). If so, is the plan to fast-track commercialization by forming a marketing alliance with the likes of Becton Dickinson?
