AP - A Vietnamese-Australian was sentenced to death by a court in Ho Chi Minh City for heroin trafficking, state-controlled media reported.

Nguyen Van Chinh, 45, was condemned to face the firing squad after being convicted of heroin trafficking at a one-day trial, the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper said.

Three Vietnamese women involved in the case were given jail terms ranging from 20 years to life in prison on the same charges, the paper said.

The four were convicted of trafficking heroin from Vietnam to Australia on many occasions, it said. Court officials were not available for comment.

Several Australians of Vietnamese descent have been sentenced to death or given hefty jail terms for heroin trafficking.
