loki01, actually you have gotten it wrong regarding Singapore. The only drug problem they had in recent history was opium. It's use was generally confined to the elderly and in the 1950's they began closing down the opium dens and as the old users died so did the use of it.
The key to their strategy was to prevent the habit being passed to the oncoming generations and they did this primarily by educating the people, ensuring they were able to find some purpose in life, and providing them with an environment that allowed them to achieve their aspirations.

The execution of drug trafficers was more to deal the problems bought to their shores by countries such as Australia where there was an increasing demand for illegal drugs and traffickers would transit through Singapore. Singapore implemented harsh penalties which caused taffickers to avoid there, next Malaysia had to take the same tough stance as it became the transit point, and now Indonesia is also having to deal with the problem, as is Vietnam in turn.
If the demand in Australia dropped, so too would the trafficking problem our neighbours have to deal with.
