unhedged means not forward sold at a certain price IE a company may sell 200,000 oz of gold at $610 us an ounce, now when they deliver it it could be selling for $800 but they get only the $610, likewise if it is selling for $540 they get $610 still.
Shorting is selling shares you dont have an d hope to buy back cheaper
