I believe the Soviet Union - the first state to formally recognize Israel - had expected Israel to become a socialist bulwark in the Middle East and when they realised that was not going to happen they started to double deal. It’s this I think we are seeing

sadly I believe that people fail to grasp the complexity of history in the Middle East, with competing political interests. The Middle East sits geographically in a position that makes it a prize to Eastern Europe and the west and of course its rich oil fields make political influence a necessity.

But Israel is a problem in so many ways. It doesn’t much like being told what to do, it’s a largely populated by people which history and religion have demonised over millennia and it sits inconveniently in the middle of an Islamic world. The latter was not so serious until the rise of fundamentalist Islam no matter the resistance of Arab states to the establishment of Israel. Over decades shifting loyalties and alliances, religious intolerance, and desire for power has created far deeper divisions than many realise

i think people have not fully understood the aspirations of post war Jordan or the involvement of Egypt either. Iran is interesting simply because their indigenous population was not Arab and they have firmly in the minds the greatness of the Persian empire however long ago that was. And yet here they are with a fundamentalist Islamic agenda. One might have expected that from Jordan maybe but not necessarily from Iran

imo it’s a mess but to blame it solely on Israel or the US as some like to do fails to take account of these competing interests and dynamics
