Yeh but seriously, I live and work in what the UN see as the 4th most corrupt country in the world (Uzbekistan) and although there are some really crappy things going on (they happen in every country to a certain extent), the people don't really help themselves.
Culturally trapped in the middle ages, politically stuck in pre revolutionary ideas of russian serfdom and out to look after themselves alone at the expense of everyone else. Similar situation in the other -stans I have been to - Khazakstan, Tajikistan, and Pakistan especially.
The arab spring is decades away if it ever comes at all to this part of the world,
so yeh, sometimes I agree with what you are saying - like I am a complaining western fool with no real problems but that doesn't mean the problems i have are not relevant to my happiness or important to my future well being. people are products of their environment so will find something to complain about wherever they are.
