    Interesting. As we get more info the gaps are getting filled. They have been saying that the surface temp hiatus was likely explained by natural variability, and they have discussed the general mechanism by which they would expect that to occur, including the impact of ENSO on ocean heating relative to surface heating. While the paper you've quoted doesn't determine this, I would expect further work will likely demonstrate the correlation between ENSO or other ocean processes with the observed change in ocean warming across depths.
