Chinese in PNG to survey giant nickel mining venture



PORT MORESBEY : Mining experts from China were due to arrive in Papua New Guinea for a first-hand look at the Ramu nickel-cobalt project, raising hopes they may kick start the 800 million US dollar venture.

Although the project has received all government approvals, progress has been slow because the venture's two partners need an additional party to provide financial and technical support, officials said.

Managing director Ian Holzberger of Highlands Pacific Ltd, which holds a 68.5 percent stake in Ramu, said interest was rising in the venture because of the "strong nickel market".

He said a new joint venture partner was likely to be introduced by the end of next month.
