Whenever anyone is hauled in for murder etc, part of the evidence is often material from their devices (phones/computers) that the accused believes is deleted but in reality is retained by the device after the delete function is exercised. People keep all sorts of graphic material on their phones and I'm sure routinely delete whatever they believe will be a source of embarrassment when handing phones into the authorities, who presumably then retrieve that material. Which is probably what happened with Higgins's deleted material in this instance. People by our nature are uncomfortable with others seeing everything about us. It's why it would be unpopular for a government to put cameras in every room of every house, even though it would reduce the rate of domestic violence.
