Redbeard, Just grossly oversold- as i said once before in Australian schools it was taught that NZ produced no MINERALS- in principle this is not far from the truth EXCEPT, they produced more gold per capita than Australia in the 1860's and they produce Coal. There is also potential for mineral sands mining (iron ore, gold etc)
One single mine at bendigo station (NZ)580 feet deep and about 20 feet across produced more gold than any other single hole in Australasia. The Hill of Gold is still there and Oceana have a lock on it at the moment.
If you visit it also produces top quality Pinot noir, Champagne and aromatic white wines, so you can get pie eyed whilst digging and panning.
