@moorookamick. I see your point mate. I never considered Australia doing likewise. For it would never be allowed to happen.
Just think. There would be Greenies and their mates attached to every structure n this land as well as blockading every major road in our cities; if we were doing it, and not their Commo buddies. Also every world court or authority would be coming out of our ears. The UN were also unable to help the people of West Papua, or now to stop China, but they ranted and raved at us, until Australia peremptorily pulled out of PNG/ About 10 - 15 years too early, and look at the mess there.
I hope not, but maybe you are correct. Perhaps we, by that method, should lay claim to the Coral Sea, and most of the northern part of the South Pacific, That really would be the death knell for the Great Barrier Reef. But who gives a stuff? At the last count, no Coral Polyps were registered to vote.
