The biggest assumptions many of you guys are making is that where you rent is the same area where you will buy. Many are far better off trading that high rent inner city property for a cheaper property in the outer suburbs for about the same money. They can then put that extra money they have either off the mortgage or put it into other investments. Sure it will be a compromise and a less ideal situation for them but they get additional stability and have the best of both worlds.
