The weaker close was despite overnight reports that Russian steel tycoon Victor Rashnikov had received Foreign Investment Review Board clearance to move to 20% of Fortescue. Such a stake would rank him second to Mr Forrest, whose personal holding of 36.5% is worth $7.5 billion.
Speaking after announcing an unrelated $US230 million coal deal in Moscow, Mr Rashnikov said the move from the 5.4% he held through Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) to 20% would have happened earlier but for Fortescue's share price gains.
