I'm not an expert on shorting around times of rights issues etc. Also maybe some stockbrokers have different rules to others.
However I believe that the shorters will not be forced to close at any time in relation to this. When RIO went from cum rights to ex rights some weeks ago, there was an adjustment in the value of the short position to allow for the value of the rights.
