Easy - someone in the know designed the plan and bought him in on it. or
He has been in the game a long time and would have an extensive network - it wouldn't take much for him to know a valuable cargo was being transported.

As to him being ok financially - even if he was ------- half a billion bucks in cargo is a juicy fish ------

plenty enough for a very wealthy life somewhere, plenty to disappear.

Don't think for one moment someone well off is beyond crime.

Money is power.

Billions talk louder than millions.
