It was either that or invade Japanese mainland and it turn into a Japanese fight to the death ie annihilation of the entire Japanese race.
If only Roosevelt/Truman/Churchill had allowed Patton and Monty to make a beeline for Berlin before the ruskies.
Ironically the West should probably have nuc'd Moscow in 1945 to save Millions from oppression /starvation and death
