I don't think anyone thinks the data is fake, it is the clinical importance that is in question.
Significant has a particular meaning in science. It doesn't mean important, it means that the results should only occur by chance less than 1 time in 20. Many medical results are statistically significant, but clinically meaningless - the thousands of studies looking at food and lifestyle differences on cancer rates are the perfect example of this. For example, if you find that eating 50 sticks of celery a week is associated with a 5% reduction in the rate of prostate cancer then you have just found a result that is statistically significant, but clinically meaningless.
