This is the whole justice system in Australia isn't it? Shying away from punishments for criminals due to the long ago convict past? Correct me if I'm wrong but seems the theme should be, "it's not the 1800's anymore", shouldn't it? There is a middle ground between the overzealous American cops/regulators and the ultra laid back Aussie/NZ justice system, right? Seems way too many bad guys and girls, even those inflicting intergenerational trauma and more problems (abuse, murder, dangerous driving, financial enrichment, etc) get a slap on the wrist or less because of the stigma of punishing bad behaviour and everyone else doing their level best suffers. I've been looking at the Justice Party and Derryn Hench and keep an open mind always.
