Funny how we have different investment strategies. For me FA is the key and I use my most basic TA skills to identify entry for long term holds (almost always on the deferreds and usually where contango hasn't kicked in). eg I'm buying defered meats (09) and deferred sugar way out (2010). Front months carry too much implied volatility for me. I prefer the 'story' to play out rather than have trades whose profitability is determined largely by technical momentum.
So far it has worked for me. Tell you in 2010 how we have gone here ... but I operate on the assumption expensive energy belies the future.
