Will Australia go ahead with URANIUM ? the $$$$$ question....

Six nations convene on Kyoto alternative
SYDNEY, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Officials from six countries that question the Kyoto protocol on global warming convened in Sydney, Australia, Wednesday to create a different set of standards.

The meeting on the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate involves Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and the United States.

Australia and the United States withdrew from the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, saying that meeting the commitments on greenhouse gas reductions that they agreed to would damage their economies. While Japan officially remains committed to its Kyoto target, it has a foot in both camps, the BBC reported.

The partnership involves four of the world's top five coal-producing countries.

The meeting has about 400 delegates from the six governments, public sector energy bodies and private industry.

A statement from Climate Action Network Australia, a coalition of environmental groups, said the project was doomed.

"Voluntary agreements have been tried before and have failed to affect significant change," the statement said. "Without targets, timetables nor market-based incentives to encourage the deployment of already developed clean energy technologies, the Asia-Pacific partnership is an empty and meaningless shell that will not help us avoid dangerous climate change."
