Hi Bernard, I'm no expert on SOFC tech but my understanding is that natural gas (or other alternatives) is used as the fuel source for SOFC. Unlike traditional means, no combustion takes place, rather the solid oxide converts the fuel to electricity (not unlike a normal battery i would think) and in the process generate waste heat. This waste heat can then be used for heating purposes. I'm not sure if this process can be reversed but elementary thermodynamics suggest that an evaporative-compressive-condensating cycle device is required to absorb ambient heat thus creating a cool space for which it can then be circulated. Like i said, traditional cooling cycles can be reversed to act as a heat pump however i'm not sure that m-CHPs are configured for this purpose.
