The writing was on the wall as soon as manaufacturers moved to global models, from regional models. Once this happened, your factories were only viable if they could churn out a couple of hundred thousand cars per year....and that was never going to happen in Australia.
In hindsight, it was a shame we chucked so much money at keeping local production alive for as long as we did. As soon as the handouts stopped, so did the jobs.
