After losing a third of their revenue during the pandemic lockdown last year, holiday and caravan parks filled up again over the Christmas holiday period as land-locked Australians hit the road to explore their own backyards and nearby regions.Over the peak holiday months of December 2020 and January 2021 national holiday park revenue was $92 million or 18 per cent higher than the bushfire ravaged period a year earlier and well up on the 2018 end-of-year holiday period, according to new data compiled by accountants BDO and the Caravan Industry Association of Australia.Heading into the Easter holidays, traditionally the busiest weekend for holiday parks, forward bookings are 332 per cent higher than COVID-hit Easter 2020 (excluding bookings that were cancelled by this time last year) and 33 per cent higher than Easter 2019.The outlook is also good for the remainder of the financial year, with forward bookings to June 30 up 148 per cent on 2020 (excluding cancellations) and up 57 per cent on 2019.“We expect these forward bookings to grow as holidays and long weekends approach, due to people wanting to book their trips closer to the time to avoid cancellations due to lockdowns,” said Angus Strachan, BDO director of business services.......
