It's interesting to note that Francois Hollande wants to reduce France's nuclear energy share of total electricity output to 50% from the current 75% by 2025 . . . . . yet he wants France to retain it's nuclear arsenal, as a deterrent.

Close attention should be paid to the wording of his promises.

"In mid 2010 a regular energy review of France by the International Energy Agency urged the country increasingly to take a strategic role as provider of low-cost, low-carbon base-load power for the whole of Europe rather than to concentrate on the energy independence which had driven policy since 1973."
    -----------------------------------------------------------

In 2011 France exported net 56 Billion KWh, which is 10.3% of the total electricity production ( all sources ) of 542 Billion KWh for that year.

Assuming only Germany & Switzerland proceed with their stated shutdown of all their nuclear power generation.

Using WNA ( World Nuclear Association) data from 2010
( pre Fukushima ) so we have a good representation of the amount of nuclear power being produced by these two countries.

    2010 Nuclear power produced

    Switzerland - 25.3 Billion KWh

    Germany - 133 Billion KWh
    ------------------------------------
Total - 158 Billion KWh rounded
    ------------------------------------

2010 France produced 410 Billion KWh nuclear power.
    -----------------------------------------------------------

Lets assume just for mathematical ease that these figures remain constant for the next 13 years to 2025.

What percentage of France's current total nuclear output would only the German and Swiss figures represent.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    410 - 158 = 252

    252/410 = 61% rounded

As you can see France is much closer to the 50% share of total electricity output.

As you can see with 158 Billion KWh being exported to Germany and Switzerland only, total generation hasn't changed but " France's nuclear energy share of total electricity" . . . . .

    " has fallen from 75% to 61% ".

Why, because that portion being exported is not counted as being part of . . . .

" Frances nuclear energy share "

In 2011 France exported 56 Billion KWh or 10.3% of total electricity production ( all sources ). . . to Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Spain, UK.

    -----------------------------------------------------------
    2012 World Nuclear Association

" France is the world's largest net exporter of electricity due to its very low cost of generation, and gains over EUR 3 billion per year from this."
