As part of Holy Week, it begins with the commemoration of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. It is interesting to note that Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem on a donkey to fulfil Zechariah's prophecy (Zechariah 9:9) in the Old Testament:
"Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey"
which is also quoted in Matthew 21:5, after telling two of His disciples,
“Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me." (Matthew 21:2).
In Zechariah 12, 13 and 14 of the OT, our Lord will return to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem, and then our Lord will pour on the House of David and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of Grace (ie, the Holy Spirit) and they will look on Him whom they pierced and will come to regret and mourn for not having seen Him as their Messiah at the first coming. Revelation 1:7 supports this where it says,"Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen."
Zechariah 12 continues to say, "Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn."
It is not a coincidence that the firstborn here is in reference to Jesus, the only begotten Son of the Father. This is Biblical proof that Jesus is the promised King in Zechariah's prophecy given that He fulfilled it by riding on a donkey into Jerusalem, being rejected by the Jews and being pierced on the cross, only later when He returns to make many of the Jews regret and mourn for rejecting Him the first time.
Note also that in 1 Thessalonians 3:13 Jesus will return with all His saints, which is in reference to Zechariah 14 where it details the exact same prophecy of Jesus returning to the Mount of Olives with "all the holy ones" (Zechariah 14:5) after He left there as explained in Acts 1:9-12 to be with His Father in Heaven.
It's very interesting to see that Zechariah covered both the first and second coming of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, our God and true Messiah, and how the OT ties to the NT perfectly yet again. Glory to God.
