I use a toothpaste made in India called "Neem" which has neem tree extracts in it. In India the neem tree is known as "the village pharmacy" as the oil has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. The toothpaste doesn't sting the skin around my mouth as do all the common commercial brands, and with an electric toothbrush I only need a tiny bit. A 125g tube ($4.95 at my local health food store) lasts me about 4 months. Neem-based ointments are great for skin conditions as well.
