In WA, you can bash someone over the head, killing them, say it was self-defence and totally escape any jail sentence....
Hard to know exactly what went down in this case, but assuming the family all testified truly, were threatened and felt scared for their lves, it's not hard to see someone reacting angrily, making sure the threat was eliminated.
Of course, the judge probably lives in a very safe part of town...
