When the violent street beating took place the family was not at risk. The first "hit" with the cricket bat would likely have injured the thief and that would have been sufficient surely to subdue him.
It seems there was an aggressive over-reaction with several people involved in beating the man with weapons, including a metal pole .... partially understandable but absolutely not acceptable
