Junglewoman, the internet should not be regulated, other than to remove content that is illegal, and even that is a huge ask considering the mammoth job it would be.
When it comes to our children, they need to be monitored by the parents as to what content they are and are not allowed to view. It is an issue of upbringing.
I do support fragmenting the internet into more specific domains, but unfortunately the church groups of the world are as usual unwilling to comprimise and move on the matter.
For example, right now porn is scattered all over the net. It is allowed to be, and no one can stop it. A parents only choice is to try and filter it, and to also educate their child as to what they can and can not view. Not so long ago, there had been a lot of work (years) devoted to setting up a new domain on the net called .xxx (if your not clear on domains, .com.au is one, .com is another, etc...you get the idea), yet the idea was put to rest by ICANN, and although their report did not go into to much detail (other than lots of transparent jibberish and excuses), it was clear that the church powers in US had placed far to much pressure to not allow such a domain, simply because the church's stance is to stamp out porn all together. This is sad state of affairs, because I believe that such things should not be censored (as free people, if someone wants to engage in adult activities, so be it), and the church's inability to remain flexible has prevented a rather good idea to surfacing.
You see, by having a .xxx domain, it would have been very simple for any parent to block this entire domain from being accessed. There are other areas of content on the internet that could also be served up under slightly more specific domains thus making it easier to filter for parents, but again, it is an issue with groups that would rather have a hard line approach than comprimise.
Where should we draw the line in trying to censor content? I don't believe we have that right. We don't have the right to pass our parenting responsibilities onto governments and censorship bodies. Material that I find offensive, someone else may not. I don't partake in discussion or viewing of porn, or weapons/guns, or sites that discuss dieting and fashion, etc.... But I don't see reason to ban such content just because I don't agree with it. That would be very narrow minded of me.
Also, this call at the moment where the government here in Aus is placing the responsibility of filtering content on the ISP is crazy and ridiculous. I sincerely hope it does not happen. For all ISP's in australia to content filter would bring our internet to a crawl, and increase costs of running business. Who are we to make our parenting responsibilities someones elses??
And this article atomou posted seems to center around bullying and harassment from a neighbor, which is something that no censorship of the internet will prevent. This was vindictive behavior, something that can take many forms.
