When I say shut down, I only mean excel, not the PC itself,
so it just takes a minute or so I guess (probably less actually).

I don't think it is a VBA issue, as it will stop sometimes, even when I am not using any VBA code on a particular chart.

Even with the issues it does what I want
a few restarts, from time to time, is no huge hassle

I do wonder if it is a bandwidth issue, as I am in a semi rural area, and often have heaps of things going on at the same time, so the PC & connection is getting a real workout.
