Nightstalker -- totally agree. This also means that the published statistics about short positions are nonsense and arguably downright misleading. I know I personally made an investment decision a while back based on the fact that there seemed to be a huge level of shorts (before I wisened up to the fact the statistics are wrong) . I am sure others are likely also to have been misled. I cant believe the ASX itself published these figures without any disclaimer. The fact of the matter is that while we may know how many shares have been short sold, we are never likely to really know how many are actually outstanding at any one time. It is theoretically possibel that the actual number of live shorts is really quite small. We really dont know and have no way of knowing.
