DJ. Australia MIM: Mount Isa Copper Smelter Ops Halted; Fire
SINGAPORE, June 13 (OsterDowJones) - Australia's base metals producer MIM
Holdings Ltd. (A.MIM) said Thursday a fire broke out at its Mount Isa copper
smelter in Queensland and production has been halted.
"We don't expect that there will be a material impact on production.
Otherwise, we would have made a statement to the stock exchange, which we
didn't," spokesman Collin Myers told OsterDowJones.
The copper smelter was producing 4,000-5,000 metric tons a week prior to the
fire, which broke out at the smelter's tapping floor at 0220 GMT Thursday
(10:20 p.m. EDT Wednesday) and was later extinguished.
"There was no threat or risks to employees. The area was evacuated," Myers
said.
Myers couldn't immediately say when the smelter will resume operations.
"We are assessing the level of damage."
