I think the science behind Midkine is still unfamiliar, and so we have a situation where society is torn between recognising this as a potential future treatment for Cancer or brushing it off as another dream medical discovery that may have not bearing whatsoever.

Coming from an academic research background, it does usually take years for even those experts to finally recognise the value of new technology/science/discovery.
