Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day – https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap210210.html – features the technology that EOS applied to revolutionise ground-to-space laser communications. The astronomical application uses a deformable mirror to correct atmospheric blurring in an incoming beam to produce a clean signal on the ground. The EOS application uses a deformable mirror to do exactly the same thing on incoming signals. For outgoing signals the mirror "pre-blurs" the beam in such a way that the atmospheric pathway will "correct" the blur so that a clean signal is received in space.
The technology has been tested and proved using EOS's proprietary research satellite.
