The infrastructure investment will come once the technology has been proven on an adequate scale to justify it. PTRs strategy of starting small, close to a ready market is a very sensible one imo. They can scale this up relatively easily and are close enough to tie this into the SA grid once this becomes commercially attractive.

(GDY also has opportunities closer to market e.g. the Hunter Valley - not sure where they are at with this one. )

The loss of power due to transmission is considered to be a relatively insignificant even over long distances - so it is really only the cost of building and maintaining the transmission infrastructure that is significant. The economics depends on the scale of the plant and the size of the target market. If a couple of nearby plants had the capacity to power a major city it would be well worth doing.

This kind of bold claim has been made about geothermal, so makes it worth considering for all the large electricty markets.
