Adding to that (same 1996 Census results), those claiming as their ethnic background a non-Australian origin, included the following:
1)
from North Africa and the Middle East, 352,000;
2)
from the rest of Africa, 163,000;
3)
from Indonesia, 63,000;
4)
from Malaysia, 107,000;
5)
making for a total of 685,000.

Even if all of these were classified as adherents of a particularly defined faith, the numbers involved would only approximate 4% of the Australian population. But the reality is somewhat less than this, as for instance, the North African ME numbers include 48,000 from Turkey and an undefined number from Israel, and the "rest of" Africa numbers include 84,000 from South Africa.

The current reality probably approximates 2% of the population which in a such a diverse multi-cultural society as what we have, would be expected (at a minimum).
