Stewards Report Re. the 2 tearaway Leaders........................ At times I wish Jockeys use what brains they have !.
Howlin' Rain Raced keenly through the early stages. Near the 1700m when close to the heels of Dandruff was allowed to stride around that gelding and settled outside the leader near the 1400m, where it continued to race keenly when to the outside of Bogues. Rider Carleen Hefel reported the gelding overraced and may have come to the end of its preparation. Trainer Cindy Alderson confirmed that the gelding would be spelled.Bogues When questioned, rider Jason Maskiell explained he had been instructed to ride the gelding in a forward position as it is one paced. After leading at a moderate tempo, he was then pressured by Howlin' Rain, which was overracing and improved to his outside approaching the 1200m. Jason Maskiell stated as the gelding is one paced and was travelling well throughout the event, he was reluctant to restrain his mount and allow Howlin' Rain to cross to the lead and he was unaware of the margin that they had established on the remainder of the field. After viewing the Stewards' footage subsequent to the race, Jason Maskiell conceded there was an opportunity for him to allow Howlin' Rain to cross, rather than maintain his position to its inside.
