I'm not sure too many are advocating for not purchasing a house and clearing the mortgage before retirement. More the fact that now more than ever waiting to buy a house in the short/mid term wouldn't necessarily be a fiscally irresponsible decision. Houses on the east coast are now between 1.5 and 5% cheaper than they were 3 months ago. A saving of well over 50K in some places - rent in that time was what? 6k....
