Water tanks were banned because of the potential public health risk. And if you think that calling on the pivate sector will fix things then consider the change in parking costs with private ownership of airports. Quadrupling water prices will do a damn site more than hastily entering into a highly unfavourable agreement at a time of crisis.
What is needed are solutions to the public advantage. Population growth has all but eliminated the cheap water solutions. You might note that in countries with far greater water demand, $4 per kilolitre is not uncommon. A higher cost would at least provide capital for more infrastructure and would curb usage in the short term. Hasty deals will be far more harmful in the long run.
Drastic cuts in immigration would make the water problem very minor, but the filth wont entertain such ideas with the cardboard and staple shitbox sideshow to support.
