I've got a photo my grandmother took of her husband, and her brother after a pleasant stroll in the summer in Brittany. Within 12 months everything had gone to the sh!t. they were separated she in occupied france, he in England and her brother POW in Germany.

Had a family friend who got out of Sth Africa just before the apartheid blow up with everything in diamonds so had a comfortable life thereafter

I don't know if he made money on the deal but more important he had objects that held their value when the other assets were confiscated and worthless

So PMs are a safeguard IMHO
