At least one-third of all renters in the federal government's 10 most marginal seats are more paying more than 30 per cent of their gross income on rent.

The figures released by federal Labor highlight the controversial issue of housing affordability in the lead-up to this year's federal election, The Australian Financial Review reported.

The top ten marginal government seats include the NSW seats of Wentworth and Parramatta, the Queensland seat of Bonner, the South Australian seats of Kingston, Wakefield and Makin, the West Australian seats of Hasluck and Stirling and the Tasmanian seats of Bass and Braddon.

The findings come as a private poll shows voters intend to hold the government to account over the issue, with 76 per cent supporting reforms such as tax breaks for investment in affordable housing.

The polling also concluded that 84 per cent of respondents agreed that owning a home was out of reach for many Australians.

And 68 per cent of renters said they feared they would never own their own homes.
