The other day someone on the extreme left suggested to me their very simple solution to the unaffordability of housing.

It went along the lines of:

The Government abolishes private ownership of all housing and takes ownership of all housing.

Initially people will be able to stay in the houses they formerly owned.

The Government then rents out all housing with the price means tested on an individual basis, based on ability to pay.

All future housing will be built by the Government.
