if anyone is interested, there is a whole section dedicated to weather prediction in the book: "the signal and the noise" by nate silver...
it discusses why private weateher companies have a vested interest in reporting slightly differently to government bodies, how accurate different types of weather forecasts are, how humans alter the data to make it better etc...
its an excellent read, very current, similar vein to freakonomics and black swan etc...
