Francesco De Ferrari’s $17.7 million sign-on bonus as AMP’s new chief executive is long way from “collecting dying people off the street” in Calcutta with the late Mother Teresa, but this American-raised Swiss Italian is not your average business executive.

Fresh out of New York University’s Stern School of Business in the late 1980s, De Ferrari was set to follow the conventional career route and join Goldman Sachs - the former employer of our embattled PM Malcolm Turnbull.

Instead, De Ferrari took a holiday and never showed up for the golden ticket to Wall St.

He found himself in India doing charitable work with a Catholic missionary priest and then with Mother Theresa in Calcutta: “picking dying people off the street,” as he told Singapore’s The Straits Times last year.

From there he spent time building his own businesses: The first involved organising art exhibitions, he also set up an art museum in Milan, and a later business involved selling sunglasses."
