Yes, I have to agree with your comment "it's a smelly shithole where you don't want to spend an extra minute."
I been to Poipet a few times mostly taking Aussie friends for quick trip to see Angkor Wat, leaving my car at the border and getting a taxi once I clear all the touts. Its a shame that Poipet isn't a nicer place, I've always meant to have a good look around but I'm always keen to get to Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) so its only a cursory glance.
I'm surprised that booking.com doesn't have it listed for accommodation, I looked on the internet earlier to see what the prices were like and the reviews. As I mentioned before most reviews say its a bit of a dump, so yeah you're right I don't think Expats would be interested in staying. Unless they're gamblers.
