Denben,
Bass Strait was an oilfield with associated gas in relatively shallow waters, and a nearby market. The associated gas was a minor bonus for the oil field. NW gas has no oil and is a long, expensive trek to market. 3 TCF is pretty minor for those type of fields. Possibly someday if floating LNG plants become a reality it could be developed. But that's still years away as the concept is still in early design phase.
