It sometimes pays to look back to see a potential future. By example:
The Roman Empire was all powerful until the Huns pushed the Goths south into Roman borderlands, the Goth leader Fritigern asked for asylum for his tribe in return for obeying Roman law, peaceful co-existence and playing by the rules of society. The Romans thought this was good deal in part to fill a labour & skills shortage and to augment its army, so instead of the expected trickle about 200,000 Goths crossed the Danube and Fritigen even converted to Christianity to demonstrate what a good fellow he really was.....if you can't trust a barbarian sh1t, who can you trust? A few months down the track the Goths did a number on the Romans and that was the start of the end of the Empire ~1700 years ago.
At the time Marcellinus warned about how the treachery and covetousness of the Goths would sink the empire; two years later he wrote how the barbarian Goths sank the empire.
Make of it what you will, but incompatible cultures invariably lead to conflicts.
