I personally don't limit myself to stock indexes, I was making the point that a newbie can beat gold by investing in a stock index without thinking.
And if you want to gamble and flip in and out of gold and potentially blow yourself up like 99.9% of half arsed traders go for it.

Gold is an intrinsically useless asset because it does not produce anything or satisfy any tangible need. As I said It seems like being short GOLD long-term is as close you can get to an interest free loan.
