In the fifties I recall rolling 3, or was it 4, pennies down into a slot when the person at the other end answered. But sometimes, if you shouted loudly they could just hear you at the other end - and you wouldn't have to to pay.
Another technique was to ring three times and then hang up. This was a signal to get picked up at the train station.
